Death notice for Jennefer Minnis Haworth died peacefully at her home Johnny Hill, Carmichael Road, in the morning on Saturday 11 January. She was 96.
Jen, born on 5 December 1928, was the daughter of Sir Arthur Geoffrey and Lady Dorothea Haworth (née Gaddum) of Free Green Farm, Over Peover. Cheshire, England. She married Herbert “H.H.” “Hub” Minnis of Calabash Bay, Andros, on 12 August 1952 in London, England. And the couple moved to Nassau, Bahamas in 1953.
An independent, unassuming and gentle but strong-minded person. Jen was the rock of the Minnis family. Her life revolved around her children. Jen led an extraordinary life, bucking the cultural norms, thinking outside the box, and she encouraged her children to do the same, and to pursue their dreams. She was a staunch proponent of non-violence towards all beings humans and animals. An avid gardener and reader, she instilled a love of books in her children. And Jen continued to read right up until the final weeks of her life. Jen loved English poetry. One of her favourites was “If” by Rudyard Kipling. She would memorise lengthy poems on her morning walks, well into her eighties, as a means of keeping her mind sharp. She also enjoyed exercising her brain by completing a cryptic crossword daily.
Jen served as a trustee of Nassau Public Library for many years. She also served on the board of the Family Planning Association, participated in the Adult Literacy Programme, and volunteered as a Yellow Bird at PMH, in the gift shop and canteen, as well as in the gift shop at the National Art Gallery.
Always composed, Jen lived a life of integrity and humility. She wanted to be remembered for having lived a useful life.
Jen was pre-deceased by her parents, husband Hub, and her brothers Jeremy and Philip (Pip).
Memories of Jen are cherished by her sister Alison Godlee of Wrexham. Wales; children Sterling Minnis, Russell Minnis, Jedda Wong, Sonya Minnis, Quentin Minnis and Roy Minnis; grandchildren Jaden Minnis, Jonathan Minnis, Rodney Minnis, Marlon Wong, Kristen Joseph. Simone Collie, Sophie Wong, Jannah Minnis, Sufian Minnis, Roman Minnis and Italy Minnis; daughter-in-law Lynette Minnis, son-in-law Patrick Wong, a host of cousins, nieces and nephews around the world, and others too numerous to mention, as well as her beloved cats Callie and Tom Brady.
The family wishes to thank Dr Graham Cates and Dr Tonya Roker-Davis of Family Medicine Centre, as well as the officers of the Carmichael Road Police Station. Anyone who wishes may make a donation to the charity of their choice, preferably one that benefits children or animals, in Jen’s name.
Jen was cremated.
