Cairo was born in CatalĂŁo, Brazil on October 20th 1954 to parents JosĂ© Evangelista da Rocha and OlĂvia Paranhos Rocha and passed away on the 17th August 2025 while visiting his family there. He is survived by his wife Cara Christie; sister Sonia Maria Paranhos Rocha Ayres (husband Helder Ayres); brother Fabio Paranhos Rocha (wife Fatima Rocha); mother-in-law Rosemary Christie; sister-in-law Cathie Wallas (husband Tony Wallas); brother-in-law John Christie (wife Paola Christie); nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews in Brazil, Bahamas, United States and The United Kingdom.
Cairo was a lecturer, therapist and author with more than 30 years’ experience in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He received a degree in law at Associação de Ensino Unificado do Distrito Federal, BrasĂlia, Brazil in 1972; Doctor of Oriental Medicine in Tokyo, Japan in 1987; PHD in Natural Health Sciences in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2004; and a PHD in Therapeutic Counselling at Open International University for Complementary Medicines, Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2008.
Cara and Cairo met in Scotland and were married in 1995. They lived in Brasilia, Brazil where Cairo set up a clinic and a school with a clinic that treated underprivileged people free on Saturdays. They moved to Nassau in 1997 when Cairo opened his first clinic on Shirley Street and then later at Sandyport.
Cairo, who spoke seven languages, travelled the world speaking at conferences and seminars and wrote several books and many newspaper articles.
